FOUR GLORIOUS FACTS ABOUT THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST
(From the Book of Hebrews)

Part 2 – The Claims of Divine Righteousness Fulfilled Because of the Finished Work of Christ

By His own blood, Christ entered in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us, Heb 9.12. The Holy Place (mentioned here) is that within the veil of the tabernacle; it was where God dwelt, where His throne was. It is more familiarly known as the Most Holy Place, or the Holiest. The cherubim (who stood for God’s holy government) overshadowed the Mercy Seat upon the Ark, wherein were the tables of the Law setting out God’s righteous requirements from man. The cherubim are seen looking down on the Mercy Seat, where the blood was sprinkled. The blood of the sacrifice was proof of the execution of the claims of divine justice.

In the Old Testament, the blood was carried into the Holiest on the great Day of Atonement, and served for the whole nation. Unless atonement was made, God could not dwell among a naturally sinful people. The blood of the sacrifice was sprinkled not upon the erring people to satisfy their consciences, but upon the Mercy Seat – God’s Throne – to satisfy His righteousness about their sins.

The claims of divine righteousness were met by the shed blood. God is a holy God and He can never tolerate sin; sin must be punished. God sits upon a throne of justice. God can never make light of His holiness and justice and righteousness. Sin is defiance of God’s holiness, and therefore rebellion against a righteous God. God cannot deny Himself. The full requirements of God’s holiness and justice were met by the shed blood of Jesus. Now God is satisfied with the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary; hence our Lord was raised to the Throne in heaven. If God is satisfied, who are we to find fault with Him? Our consciences rest where God rests. God is satisfied with the Blood; the cherubim of divine holiness and justice look down in wonder at the blood-sprinkled mercy seat.

Our Lord Jesus has obtained eternal redemption, and having obtained eternal redemption He has entered into the Holiest by His own blood. He has gone into the presence of God as our heavenly High Priest, having poured out His sacrificial blood upon the cross, and He has gone in in the virtue of the atoning blood. It is the blood that makes atonement for your sins and your souls, Lev 17.11. If there is no atonement, we would perish in our sins. The soul that sins must die, Ezek 18.4

The sacrifices of the Day of Atonement were repeated every year, and the veil ever remained as a barrier, hiding the Mercy Seat and the Throne of God. Until there should be a sacrifice capable of magnifying divine majesty, there could be no access for man into the presence of God. But when the Lord Jesus shed His blood, the veil in the temple was rent from top to bottom. We now have access with boldness into the very throne-room of God.

The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, had magnified the nature of God about sin, and therefore God unveiled the Holiest. God has now revealed His righteousness to us in the gospel, and has shown us the death of Christ satisfying His righteousness. Hence the very throne of God’s justice becomes the security of our salvation.

We see the righteousness of God in the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross. The high priest of old could enter into the Holiest only once a year, and that too with fear and trembling. But Christ entered into the Holiest of all, the presence of God in heaven, and He has entered in our behalf. His sacrifice was made on our behalf; He is our Representative in heaven. His sacrifice has been accepted. He sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high. It is a finished, complete, once-for-all, accomplished work, perfect in all respects, and fully satisfying the righteousness, justice and holiness of God.

Christ has entered into the Holiest and we have boldness to enter into the Holiest, because of the efficacy of the precious shed Blood of the LJC. “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and lving way which He consecrated for us, through the rent veil of His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…” Heb 9.19-22.
