FOUR GLORIOUS FACTS ABOUT THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST
(From the Book of Hebrews)
Part 3 – Christ Abides Continually In God’s Presence For Us
It is a glorious fact that not only are our sins gone, and the nature of God is magnified, but that Christ having put away our sins, He is continually before God interceding for us as our heavenly High Priest.
Instead of looking upon our sins, God looks upon HIm who put our sins away. Our heavenly High Priest bears our names upon His Person and abides within the Holiest of All, in the very presence of God.
The high priests of old stood before the Mercy seat and sprinkled the blood thereon to atone for sins. They could do this only once a year, on the Day of Atonement. But our heavenly High Priest sits at the right hand of God. In the tabernacle of old, there was no seat provided, for there was no rest obtained by its sacrifices. God said to His Son, “Sit Thou upon My right hand”, for He has finished the work that His Father had given Him to do. Once God in His justice had forsaken His Son upon the cross, but now God in His justice has established Him as a Man upon the throne. It is His justice; since Christ fulfilled all righteousness and the divine claims of justice by shedding His blood for us upon the cross.
Observe the scene of rest. Christ seated, His work completed, His toil ended. He is seated in God’s presence as our Representative. He has met our need as sinners by shedding His precious blood on the cross; He has magnified the majesty of God’s throne (established on righteousness, justifce and holiness) by dying that terrible death on Calvary; and now as risen and ascended, in token of God having accepted His sacrifice, being fully satisfied with His Finished Work on the Cross (He paid the debt in full!), He is seated on the Throne of God. We are at rest, at peace, fully assured that He has obtained eternal redemption for us, we are eternally secure – for that is what the Book of Hebrews tells us. Read these three verses. “We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”, Heb 10.10. “This Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God”, Heb 10.12. “By one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified”, Heb 10.14.
Hence we have boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, Heb 10.19. We can come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need, Heb 4.16. Let us never forget that our heavenly High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, is continually interceding for us before God and His Father, Heb 7.25.
