The alarming rise of profanity on social networking sites like Twitter is cause for deep concern. It reflects the rapid degeneration of modern society. We live in the age of immorality, perversion and decadence. Paul the apostle spoke of this in Romans chapter 1:18-32. He was referring not only to reprobate Roman society; but he was foreseeing our shameless and dissolute ’21st century culture’. Notice the language of teenagers and those in their 20s and 30s on Twitter – how full of filth, abuse, swear words, and cursing. That’s clearly an indication of sick, perverted minds. The younger generation seriously need help, counselling and deliverance from the ‘quack science’ called psychology (which endorses swearing and cussing).
Swearing is a tool for losers, whiners, grumblers, non-achievers and never-do-wells. Swearing is for those who have a morbid and negative outlook on life. People by nature love to wallow in muck and slime. What does the apostle Peter say? “The dog turns to his own vomit again; and the sow that is washed to her wallowing in the mire.” 2 Pet 2.22. The dog here is the flea-infested pariah dog found in the East. The pig is the black scavenger found among sewers and drains in the streets of South Asia. In short, I would say that habitual swearing or cussing shows extreme lack of self-control. It’s tantamount to fecal incontinence; it’s using the mouth as an excretory opening.
Swearing reflects the ‘dumbing down’ of today’s ‘civilized’ society. People who swear are those who prefer a filthy environment to a clean one; they would rather live in stinking slums and hovels than in decent surroundings. These people are unstable (they easily fall apart), hostile (to the moral code, and norms and regulations of a civilized society) and violent (swearing is a form of verbal assault). Abusive, vulgar, obscene and shocking language is reflective of a septic and depraved character. It is very likely that those who swear and cuss have anti-social criminal tendencies and indulge in perverted behaviour. The sad part is that no one is grieved over the epidemic of swearing and cursing on Twitter.
The Bible warns us of the misuse of the tongue. The tongue can build up or destroy. Cursing, swearing, using filthy and offensive language – shows how the tongue can be “a flame of fire, a world of wickedness”. Every day we are exposed to a torrent of abuse and insults on Twitter and other social networking sites. The tongue can corrupt the entire body, because it is set on fire by hell itself. The tongue is full of deadly poison. When we curse and swear, we are violating God’s commandment and bringing a curse upon ourselves. Read James 3:6-9; Eph 4.29; 2 Tim 2.16.
Modern psychologists (the equivalent of quack doctors) say that swearing helps let off steam. These charlatans say that it is better to indulge in verbal violence than in physical violence. They say, “Swearing is like using the horn on your car, which can be used to signify a number of emotions (e.g., anger, frustration, shock, surprise).” They say, “Swearing is often cathartic — it frees us of the feelings of anger or frustration we hold.” All this is humbug, a lie! There’s simply no excuse for profanity.
A few generations ago, people were decent enough to avoid ‘taboo’ words (sexual and scatological terms). But in the modern environment of outrageous ugliness and nauseous indecency (spurred on by a false and Satanic ‘psychology’), swearing does not express “frustration, anger or surprise” – as many suppose. These insulting cuss-words and taboo words are just a step away from hate speech, verbal abuse, sexual harassment and repulsive obscenity. Many would have observed that the media (spurred on by the ‘prince of the power of the air’) promotes profanity, and modern comic shows (and popular talk shows) resort to profanity and ‘dirty jokes’, which they call ‘roasting’. Sadly, a callous and stupid audience seems to enjoy sick comedy.
It is high time that rules were made to ban vulgarity and ‘disgusting speech’ on social Internet sites. In my opinion, swearing is a sign that the foul-mouthed soul is cut off from God and headed for damnation. In many cases, profanity is a sign of demonic possession. It is not a matter to be taken lightly. (Let the reader be warned.)
